Environmental Baselines

چکیده

A key element of the environmental monitoring programme of the International Seabed Authority is the establishment of environmental baselines. Regulation 28, paragraph 2 of the draft Mining Code states: "The Authority shall also develop procedures and guidelines for the establishment of environmental baselines against which to assess the likely effects on the marine environment of activities in the Area." The actual collection of information for such baseline definition is the responsibility of the contractor. Regulation 28, paragraph 3 of the draft Mining Code states: "...Each contract shall require the contractor.... to establish environmental baselines against which to assess the likely effects of its programme of work on the marine environment and a programme to monitor and report on such effects." To this end, the Workshop heard presentations on exploration techniques and potential mining systems for deepsea polymetallic nodule mining, and the current state of knowledge of the biological, physical and chemical environment in the nodule provinces of the Area, in particular, the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ) of the central Pacific Ocean.

Climate: Baselines for the Biological Effects of Environmental Change

Establishing biological baselines requires access to organisms which lived earlier in, or before, the present episode of anthropogenic change. Specimens of a bryozoan collected on Scott's Antarctic expeditions, and subsequently, provide clear evidence of recent increases in growth rate after 80 years of constancy.

Seasonal Variation in Stable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotope Values of Bats Reflect Environmental Baselines

The stable carbon and nitrogen isotope composition of animal tissues is commonly used to trace wildlife diets and analyze food chains. Changes in an animal's isotopic values over time are generally assumed to indicate diet shifts or, less frequently, physiological changes. Although plant isotopic values are known to correlate with climatic seasonality, only a few studies restricted to aquatic e...

Selection on wing allometry in Drosophila melanogaster.

Five bivariate distributions of wing dimensions of Drosophila melanogaster were measured, in flies 1) subjected to four defined environmental regimes during development, 2) taken directly from nature in seven U.S. states, 3) selected in ten populations for change in wing form, and 4) sampled from 21 long inbred wild-type lines. Environmental stresses during development altered both wing size an...

Shifted Baselines Reduce Willingness to Pay for Conservation

A loss of memory of past environmental degradation has resulted in shifted baselines, which may result in conservation and restoration goals that are less ambitious than if stakeholders had a full knowledge of ecosystem potential. However, the link between perception of baseline states and support for conservation planning has not been tested empirically. Here, we investigate how perceptions of...

Conceptualising attributional LCA is necessary for resolving methodological issues such as the appropriate form of land use baseline

Purpose The purposes of this commentary are to further an on-going debate concerning the appropriate form of land use baseline for attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) and to respond to a number of arguments advanced by Soimakallio (Int J Life Cycle Assess 20:1364–1375, 2016). The commentary also seeks to clarify the conceptual nature of attributional LCA. Methods The overarching approach ...
